The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) on Thursday destroyed large quantities of aphrodisiac at the Saba landfill site at Weija in Accra and cautioned Ghanaians to desist from using such drugs due to their harmful effects. They included antibiotics, love portions and assorted sex enhancement drugs. The drugs were seized during a swoop on traders dealing in illegal drugs and aphrodisiac at Okaishie, Kaneshie, Tudu and Accra Central Business Centre.Mr Thomas Amedzro, the Head of Post Market Surveillance, said the drugs contained extremely overdose active ingredient of aphrodisiac and instead of opening the blood vessels of the reproductive organs they opened all other vessels making them dangerous to users. He said persons with cardiovascular, sickle cell and other diseases stood the chance of worsening their diseases adding that these drugs could be effective immediately but then their long term effects could be injurious especially to the body organs.Mr Amedzro said these drugs in addition, had psychological and psychological effects on users and could cause priapism, a persistent, usually painful erection that lasts for more than four hours and occurs without sexual stimulation as well as hormonal imbalances because the drugs side steps the hormones and could lead to their dysfunction.Mr James Lartey, Head of FDB Public Affairs, told newsmen that the exercise had become necessary due to increase in the illegal activities of traders. He said drugs sold in the country should be registered with FDB to ensure quality, safety and efficacy and added that the impunity with which these drugs entered the country from the eastern borders was worrying.Mr Lartey advised the public to ensure they purchased medicines from only approved premises (Licensed Chemical Shops and Pharmacies) since these places were licensed premises being manned by qualified personnel."Drugs should be sold under a certain temperature and selling them on the open market can affect their potency even if their efficacy is standard," Mr Lartey said.He assured the public of FDB's readiness to protect public health and safety always and appealed to the public to desist from buying drugs which had no English labelling.Mr Lartey urged the public to report persons suspected to be in any practice that could endanger public health and safety through any of the following contact numbers; 0244337235, 0262689296 or 0244385086.Below are names of some of the seized and destroyed unregistered products that the public should be cautious of:1.
