Feverish preparations are on-going at the Sunyani Coronation Park, venue for the upcoming congress of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), slated for July 8 to 9 to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2012 Presidential Election.
The park is being put to a befitting shape for the event as a visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday indicated an improvement of otherwise deteriorating facilities at the Park.
Currently, the Works Sub-Committee of Congress Organizing Committee of the NDC Brong Ahafo Regional branch is undertaking repair works at the park.
These included the spreading of quarry chippings and sand on the outer perimeter of the football pitch, stabilising the stands, provision of lighting systems and adequate seats as well as painting works to give the venue a face-lift.
Mr Opoku Atuahene, Regional Chairman of the party in an interview with the GNA, expressed the hope that by Sunday July 3, all preparations at the place would be completed.
He could not, however, quote how much money was being expended on the refurbishment of the park “because funds for that are from different sources”.
Mr Atuahene said that delegates and individuals should have no cause to fear “because we’ve put in place all security measures to address concerns. We’ve also advised delegates to be civil in their
dealings with one another”.
Mr. Atauhene said supporters who would not be at the congress ground, had been asked “not to do anything to tarnish the image of the party”.
He noted that specific parking spaces outside the park had been provided for the fleet of vehicles expected during the period because “no car will be allowed inside the venue”.
On accommodation, Mr. Atuahene said a greater number of hotels and guest houses in the Sunyani Municipality and the Region at large had been booked, adding that delegates from Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions would be accommodated in Kumasi.
He said Berekum would host Central Regional delegates whilst delegates from the Northern, Upper East and West Regions would lodge in Techiman and those from the Volta, Western, Eastern and Brong-Ahafo Regions would lodge in Sunyani.
Mr Atuahene stated that seating arrangements had been done according to regions to ensure cordiality, cohesion and effective communication and added that the media have also been provided with stands and other facilities to enhance their work.
He said there would be a massive clean-up in the Municipality on Friday, July 1, to rid the area of filth.
A letter from the Regional Co-ordinating Council has requested all heads and staff of ministries, departments and agencies to fully participate in the exercise.
