Volta Regional Director of Electoral Commission, Miss Laurencia Kpatakpa, has observed that not more than two per cent of the 881,206 registered voters in the region sought replacement for their voters’ identity cards.
She said during a tour of centres during the just ended national exercise to replace lost or defaced voters identity cards, most rural dwellers kept their cards in safety and only visited the centres to make enquiries.
Miss Kpatakpa told Ghana News Agency at Ho on Wednesday that the situation was different from the urban dwellers where the hustle and bustle and frequent use of the cards for transactions, resulted in most people misplacing or defacing them.
She said not more than 1,000 replacements were made in two out of the 15 districts so far and full statistics on the exercise in the region would be ready soon.
Miss Kpatakpa called on the media to help educate the people on the procedure for the voters' registration process ahead of election.
She said opening of the voters’ register would take place after the replacement exercise, for eligible voters and those who could not register previously to register.
Miss Kpatakpa said the last exercise before a final electoral roll, was the exhibition of the register, where voters were expected to check for their names and assist in the elimination of deceased voters from the register.
She explained that at the exhibition stage, voters had the opportunity to substitute their new names acquired as a result of marriage and should support such claims with valid documents.
