The provision of financial support for Ghanaian players in the domestic leagues is feasible, according to Edem Agbana, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sports Committee.
The party has promised to provide monthly stipends to support clubs and home-based footballers if elected into government.
With 18 Ghana Premier League clubs, 48 Division One League clubs, and numerous others from Division Two and grassroots levels, there is curiosity about the feasibility of fulfilling the policy.
“Currently, government has the capacity to provide some support to the clubs. We are not saying that the players will be placed on government’s payroll but government will give a support system,” Edem told JoySports.
“There are some Ghana Premier League players who receive less than GhC400 monthly. Government has the capacity to provide some support to the clubs. Everything about leadership is about priority.”
“We have checked the feasibility and we are convinced that the John Dramani Mahama led-government will be able to provide incentives to clubs to increase payment to players in the league.”
The NDC also promised to give equitable attention to lesser known sports and offer scholarships to promising talents.
