The Legal Policy Officer of the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), Mr Kojo Asante has suggested alternative ways of dealing with corruption in the country. He said that although the prosecution of corrupt officials was important, it was better to put measures in place to discourage the practice in the first place.Mr Asante suggested that Parliament pressurise government to find alternative ways of fighting corruption instead of just relying on prosecution.
He noted that public office holders and other civilian workers could be denied their promotion if they were found to be corrupt. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament exposed massive corruption in the public sector discovered by the Auditor-General in its audit report at its public hearing last year. The PAC made some recommendations bothering on the prosecution of those found to have looted state coffers, while others are expected to refund the money they stole from the state.Speaking to Joy News, the Deputy Chairman of the PAC, Mr Godfred Abayate, noted that the committee would ensure that its recommendations were fully implemented.
