A family of four tragically lost their lives after a fire consumed their home in Gyinyaase, a suburb of the Asokwa Municipality in the Ashanti region.
Linda Agyemang, who worked as a nurse at the Kumasi South Hospital, and her three children aged between 7 and 14 died after they were trapped in a their-bedroom apartment.
The fire incident is reported to have occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 8, 2025.
The blazing fire destroyed the house and other properties contained in it as other tenants narrowly escaped being torched.
”My wife woke me up around 3.30 am to inform me about the fire. I rushed to the scene and heard the children screaming for help. While attempting to break the door, I heard a loud explosion from the kitchen area.
"I suspect it may be a gas cylinder. Another person joined me to try breaking the window area to take the children out but our attempt was not successful", a co-tenant, Owusu George recounted.
Firefighters arrived at the scene after receiving the distress call and managed to extinguish the fire, but the victims were found burnt beyond recognition in the bathroom.
Firefighters say they received the distress call around 4.30 am and by the time they arrived at the scene - 10 minutes later - the fire had consumed the four persons.
The incidents add to the over 183 fire outbreaks recorded in the Ashanti region between January 1 and February 7, 2025, with at least six dead.
The charred bodies of the deceased have since been conveyed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.
The fire service has commenced an investigation to establish the cause of the fire.
