The National Youth Coordinator and First Aid Instructor of the Ghana Red Cross Society, Ernest Nyame P. Annan has cautioned “first aiders to be calm but courageous to assess accidental situations before finding ultimate solutions to curb them.”
This, he observed, could be achieved through determination, hardwork and excellent training skills.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Ultimate Health programme, Tuesday, Mr. Annan maintained that well trained and tested personnel who have indeed passed exams on the course are capable of giving professional first aid.
First aid, he said, is the first casualty treatment giving to a patient in need before he or she is transported to the hospital for intensive care. For a layman, the first thing that comes into mind after an accident has occurred is to quickly send the injured persons to the nearest hospital, but Ernest disagrees, he explained that the first thing to do is to examine the victim and give him or her first aid.
This, he explained, without could aggravate the degree of damages that may occurred, and urged persons to make careful examination on victims, give them emergency treatment before taking them to the health centre for intensive treatment.
Mentioning a number of principles bordering on first aid, he counselled people to be conscious of an accident’s detail and ensure safety first in every situation, before attempting to go close to the accident scene.
He said bleeding and opened wounds should be put under control before transporting victims to the hospital.
