Police in the Upper West Region have so far arrested five people in connection with last month's shooting of regional Minister Alhaji Amin Amidu Sulemani.
All the five were picked up from their separate hideouts in the region upon tip-offs between December 25, 2013 and January 3, 2013; Regional police commander DCOP Kofi Danso disclosed at a news conference at the regional capital, Wa.
They include four Fulanis and one Moshie from Bawku. Their names were given as Waleika Iddris, Jallo Fuseini, Munya Jallo, Osman Amin and Korka Sonde
Waleika Iddris is alleged to be an informant to armed robbers, DCOP Kofi Danso noted, while Jallo Fuseini, Munya Jallo and Korka Sonde are alleged robbers on the wanted list of the Burkina Faso police.
He said all the suspects have been remanded in court pending further investigations.
DCOP Danso blames the upsurge in armed robberies in the area in recent times on what he says is Ghana’s porous border with Burkina Faso.
The Regional Commander also mentioned free movements of Fulanis in the region; connivance of criminals with some cattle owners; the nature of the roads in the region; and long distance between communities as the other causes.
“Apart from these short comings, there are uncountable unapproved routes between Ghana, that is Upper West, and Burkina Faso that make it easy for people to cross over to either side.”
