Five individuals have tragically drowned in the Afram River while on a boat crossing to farmlands at Azietsikorpe in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District.
Efforts to rescue a sixth person are still ongoing.
Johnson Anglesinya, the Assemblyman for the Gyata Electoral Area, confirmed the incident to 3news.com, adding that six other individuals were successfully rescued.
The victims were part of a group of 12 hired to work on a farm across the Afram River.
On Wednesday evening, without life jackets, they embarked on a boat journey, hoping to reach their destination on Thursday, November 9. Unfortunately, the drowning incident occurred.
While water levels have receded, the volumes in the Afram River remain high, posing a risk to boats, especially without proper safety measures. Rescue efforts are being coordinated by officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and residents near Afram Lake.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kwahu Afram Plains South, Evans Ntiri–Kyei, stated that he is awaiting an official briefing from the rescue team.
