The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA)has instructed the Department of Urban Roads to immediately fix all non-functioning traffic lights in the urban areas across the country within 60 days.
The Authority is unhappy that pedestrians have been exposed to road traffic accidents at some intersections due to the dysfunctional traffic system.
It is estimated that 36% of pedestrians die each year due to unsafe roads or poor road traffic regulations.
In an exclusive interview with JoyNews, the Acting Director in charge of Regulations, Inspection and Compliance, Kwame Koduah, explained what motivated his action.
“By reason of roads been a part of us of our name, there is a certain impression that we must fix everything that has to do with the road.
"Year of road service protocols, there are various institutions and what everyone must do safety so if for any reason there is a certain gap and may create problems for my deliverables, I mean I need to act essentially,” he said.
According to him, the Authority will be left with no option but to activate the Road Safety Act 2019 and Act 993 to seek an enforcement order should the urban roads department fails to fix the problem.
