A former Assemblyman for the Alavanyo area, David Amaldo has raised concerns about the lack of adequate security in the area following recent clashes between the communities of Alavanyo and Nkonya. Speaking on News @ 8 on Multi TV, he said previous clashes between the police and some people of Nkonya may have informed the police to situate more men in Nkonya. Mr Amaldo further stated that, “once the security men are in the other town and they are not here, it clearly shows that they were only brought to support the other party against the other”. However, the commanding officer in charge of the police patrol team in the area, DSP Samuel Ackom says more personnel have been brought in to beef up security in both Nkonya and Alavanyo. Joy News’ Emmanuel Anteh, who visited the battle ground in an area between Nkonya and Alavanyo reports seeing hundreds of used bullet pellets and cartridges along the streets. But, DSP Ackom was quick to say, this observation was not an indication that there were exchange of gun fire in the town. He told Joy News, the factions rather met in the bush to fight but when they saw the police patrol team, they ceased fighting. He offered assurances to residents that the Police will stay in the town till the situation is brought under control. “What we intend doing is to keep our men here until the authorities are able to negotiate with the factions to understand themselves to the point where the sequence of fighting will end”, he said. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Kwasi Ahwoi and Chairman of the National Peace Council, Professor Emmanuel Asante on Saturday met with leadership of the two communities to sign a peace deal. The meeting was aimed at helping bring to an end the over nine decades of feud between these two towns.
