Former Member of Parliament for Kumbugu Alhaji Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu has been elected by delegates of the National Democratic Congress in Kumbugu constituency to contest in the April 30 bye-election.
Alhaji Kakpagu polled 170 votes to beat his closest contender Dr Jacob Yakubu Mahama who polled 84 votes.
Abubakari Mohammed polled 14 votes, while Hamza Adam Abdulai and Baba Ibrahim had 12 and 9 votes respectively.
The sixth aspirant, Mohammed Imoro stepped down at the congress ground.
The primary supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission saw 289 delegates casting their votes, but there were no rejected ballots, Joy News’ Hashmin Mohammed reported.
In his victory speech, Alhaji Imoro Yakubu Kakpagu said there was no winner or loser in the election, noting it was an “internal battle and my intention is to reach out to my colleagues”.
The Kumbungu constituency seat became vacant following the resignation of the Member of Parliament Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni to take up a new appointment as the Secretary-General of African, Caribbean and Pacific States.
