Mr. Frank Agyekum, spokesperson of ex-President Kufuor, has denied reports of security personnel beating up pressmen at the ex-president's residence. The security personnel guarding the ex-president’s residence are alleged to have molested journalists who accompanied the Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Kofi Portuphy, on a tour of some flood-prone areas in Accra.Sources close to NADMO said officials had been hinted of a collapsed wall at Mr Kufuor’s house after a heavy downpour, for which reason they visited the premises for verification. But a row is said to have ensued between some of the journalists and the security men at the private residence, who would not allow a video recording or still photographs of the house. An Accra daily reported that while the journalists insisted they needed to draw attention to the situation, the security persons maintained that was not allowed because the facility was a private property for which they needed permission to photograph. While the exchanges continued the security men are said to have seized and smashed on the ground the cameras. The state-owned Ghanaian Times newspaper also reported that another journalist who works with an Accra-based radio station who tried to run a live report of the encounter, had his phone seized and smashed on the same grounds that he had no permission. But speaking to Joy FM's Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah on Thursday, Mr Agyekum denied the pressmen were assaulted. He said although there was a minor “altercation” no one was actually beaten up.“I have no information that anybody was beaten up or a camera was intentionally taken and thrown away. A bit of a scuffle ensued and in the process one or two cameras or phones fell to the ground and were damaged,” Mr Agyekum said.Mr Agyekum also denied reports that the former First Lady, Theresa Kufuor, engaged the NADMO boss in an exchange of words. He said Mrs Kufuor had only insisted on Mr Portuphy alone entering the building to conduct the necessary checks while the pressmen waited outside.Meanwhile a complaint on the incident is said to have been lodged with the police who have taken the statements of both the “assaulted” pressmen and the guards.Story by Fiifi Coomson/Myjoyonline.com
