As today marks the first day of the month for the inauguration of John Mahama as the President of Ghana, I have elected to celebrate and eulogise a special person whose contribution led to the unprecedented parliamentary success and the biggest Presidential gap in the Fourth Republic (in terms of valid votes).
The man Sammy Gyamfi!
I met him at KNUST in 2008 at Unity Hall “Always Around”. He was then a freshman reading Bsc. Environmental Science. He is a science student from St. James Minor Seminary (you see why he is intelligent in every aspect)
We became friends because of NDC and subsequently became more than brothers. He has been of enormous blessing to me, but that is a topic for another episode.
Ashanti Region is the stronghold of the NPP, by extension KNUST is a stronghold of the NPP, and since 2008 was an election year there were regular political debates at “Always Around,”
He conquered the NPP guys with his fact-based analysis. Dude can research! "Whaaaattt!!!"
It was not surprising that he became the PRO for TEIN-KNUST and later the President in 2012, another election year. He took on UTAG for embarking on a politically motivated strike just to make the NDC government unpopular.
He has always been fearless and bold in everything he does. (I was damn afraid that some members of the faculty were going prevent him from graduating but he always laughed it off and told me that I am "fearoo".
He pursued Law after his first degree at KNUST and was called to the Bar in 2018. At the Ghana School of Law, he was elected the SRC President. He has since become the standard for measuring the performance of every SRC President after him.
He lived for others and never thought only of himself. He stood up for the welfare and interests of the students.
To enhance his knowledge and appreciation of Economics, he pursued the sort after MA. Economic Policy Management program at the University of Ghana. (You can comfortably say he is an economist too).
Sammy is an Environmental Scientist, a Lawyer and an Economist.
After NDC had lost the 2016 elections, there was disappointment and despair, some former appointees were afraid of the witch-hunting and were nowhere to be found, and most National Executives were shocked at the results and were in a state of denial.
Then emerged the man Sammy Gyamfi, who had excelled in his various positions in KNUST and also was a household name in Kumasi because of his excellent delivery on radio.
Sammy’s emergence at the national stage gave life to the seemingly dead communications department of the party. The young men and women who had given up and thought NDC was “dead” began to believe that there was hope.
Those of us who have had the rare privilege to have known him back in KNUST were not surprised at his exploits at the national level.
In 2018, he presented himself to be elected as National Communications Officer of the great NDC. He won by a landslide victory because the party people were impressed with his communication skills and his ability to relate with the grassroots.
I dare say, that the decision to elect Sammy Gyamfi as the NCO of the great NDC is the best thing that has happened to the party in the last two decades.
In 2020, as NCO he led the most vibrant communications department of any political party. He organized pressers, appeared on TV and radio stations, hosted “Nokware mmre” the program that sent shivers down the spine of Akufo-Addo and his cronies.
These series of activities helped to discredit and expose the incompetent, dishonest, nepotistic and corrupt Akufo-Addo regime.
He also propagated the policies of HE John Mahama and the great NDC. Unfortunately, we lost the 2020 election due to what we believe was a grand scheme of rigging by the Electoral Commission.
In 2024, he continued with his exceptional performance in 2020 and introduced another phase. He toured all the Akan-speaking regions to sell the message of the NDC to the grassroots. The people were so happy anytime they saw him in their constituencies
Some thought he was only good on radio and TV but his interactions at the Constituencies changed their perception. He is a great grassroots communicator.
His leadership qualities as an NCO is beyond description. He knew that he couldn’t do the work alone, therefore, he introduced more knowledgeable and vibrant young people into the national communications team.
The popular saying is that, Sammy Gyamfi is whoever he says he is!
Sammy Gyamfi, Ayekoo for the great work done for H.E. John Mahama and the great NDC.
