Music producer Fred Kyei Mensah, popularly known as Fredima, has responded to claims by highlife artiste Ofori Amponsah that he was not the one that introduced him to the late Daddy Lumba.
In a Facebook post, Fred Kyei Mensah wrote: “There is a conversation going round about an interview Ofori Amponsah had on Hitz FM denying that I NEVER took him to the late Daddy Lumba’s house to present his demo song ‘Odo Mmra Fie’. I have written several articles, had countless interviews and the late Daddy Lumba even admitted meeting myself and him while alive.”
According to him, he has several witnesses who can confirm that he was present when Ofori first met Daddy Lumba. He listed his wife, Jose Addo, Eb De Noble Choice, Selina Orleans Lindsay, Omama Agyei, and Nana Agyei Kodie as some of the people who can testify to the event.
Fred explained that although Ofori has acknowledged that he produced his demo, he seems to have forgotten that they went together to Lumba’s house 32 years ago.
“I have not said anywhere that I was the first person who introduced him to Daddy Lumba but was the first to accompany him to present his demo to Lumba,” he clarified.
Making reference to an old prophecy from a relative, he added: “While programming his song in 1993, an uncle of mine said, ‘Ofori will one day deny certain things about you meeting him.’”
Fred challenged Ofori to deny that he sat in his car in 1993 when they drove to Daddy Lumba’s house at Dome, saying, “If he says he didn’t do it, I will add it to the seven wonders of the ancient world.”
He concluded his post by saying there is no malice in his statement, writing, “At least my demo fetched him a springboard in his life. No malice. We move. Good beads don’t rattle.”
The Facebook post comes after Ofori Amponsah, in an interview on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz with Kwame Dadzie and Doreen Avio, denied ever going to Daddy Lumba’s house with Fred Kyei Mensah.
“It wasn’t Fredima who introduced me to Daddy Lumba. I went out searching for a producer by myself. He did the demo for me and I had to take it around,” Ofori said.
He added that he personally visited Daddy Lumba’s house, presented his demo, and later received an invitation from the highlife legend.
“I went to Daddy Lumba’s house myself, presented my demo, and the following day he said he listened to it and wanted to see me. I went in and he said ‘I will help you. That’s all,’” Ofori recounted.
The musician also claimed that it was rather he who later took Fred Kyei Mensah to meet Daddy Lumba, along with Selina Orleans, who went on to record a gospel song with the veteran musician.
In earlier accounts, the veteran producer Fredima had claimed he personally drove Ofori Amponsah to meet Daddy Lumba. He repeated the same assertion on Power FM three years ago, suggesting that Ofori’s recent comments contradicted his earlier interviews where he credited him for linking him to the highlife legend.
Fred Kyei Mensah also stated that Daddy Lumba once asked if Ofori had ever shown appreciation for his role in his rise to fame.
