Dancehall artiste, Samini, has revealed that he has not earned money from Ghana since he released his debut hit song ‘Linda’ in 2004.
“Lucky for me and some others (artistes), we saw the vision and signed me onto some international collection societies and for the past 12 years I’ve received some cheques from them,” he said on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM.
Samini stated that many veterans in the music industry are suffering because they did not fight to put in place laws to guide their intellectual property.
He explained that their actions have gone ahead to affect the new generation who are not getting much in terms of royalty.
“Can we now identify what we need and put it in policy and supply to the office to discuss the forward?” he quizzed.
His revelation comes after he and some of his colleagues began a campaign to get musicians to benefit from their works in Ghana.
Samini teamed up with Reggie&Bollie, Stonebwoy, Edem and others to find ways, including getting a law passed, to get the royalty system in Ghana working.
He told Andy Dosty, host of the show, that if they do not unite to get laws passed to protect artistes’ intellectual property, all their demonstrations, talks and campaigns would be in vain.
“I think we should act today. And find the right office to enter...that needs to be addressed,” he added.
