A 25-year-old Fulani herdsman, Amadu Bube, has been jailed 140 years for robbery, after he was found guilty by the Aflao Circuit Court presided over by Mr. Francis Obiri.
Amadu, a Sakata-born Nigerian resident in Aflao, was sentenced on two counts of robbery out of the initial three since the third complainant, Elvis Gyan Kwadwo, did not show up in court.
He was therefore sentenced to 70 years for each count and they are to run concurrently.
According to the prosecutor, DSP Akwasi Asafo Agyei, on January 6th this year, the accused person and seven others embarked on a series of robbery attacks on a number of travellers at Penyi which is located on the Dzodze-Aflao high way in the Ketu-South district of the Volta Region.
Amadu and his cronies robbed a driver, Vincent Aryee of GH¢450, as well as three others - Thomas Sunday; an Accra-Lagos driver who lives at Komenda, Kwame Afariwa; a Ghanaian resident in Lagos, Nigeria, and Elvis Gyan Kwadwo; a driver resident in Ofankor, a suburb of Accra.
DSP Akwasi Asato Agyei told the court that between 6th and 7th January this year, the robbers blocked a portion of the road at Penyi with palm logs, laid ambush and attacked travellers.
He said Thomas Sunday was in charge of a Volvo commercial vehicle with registration number Em 754 APP, en route to Nigeria with eight passengers including the second complainant, Kwame Afariwa.
On reaching a section of the Penyi road, he was compelled to stop due to the roadblock.
Suddenly, Amadu and seven other bandits emerged from a nearby bush and ordered their victims to get down and lie prostrate on the ground.
The accused and one of his accomplices were allegedly wielding shot guns while the others wielded cutlasses and clubs.
They robbed the two complainants and the other passengers of their mobile phones and cash.
In the course of the robbery, the third complainant, Elvis Kwadwo Gyan, who was driving towards Aflao in a Kia vehicle with registration number GC 2042- 09, also stopped at the same spot due to the roadblock.
The robbers shot at the complainant through his side glass and the bullet fell on the other door. They pulled him out of the vehicle and made away with three Nokia mobile phones and a cash amount of GH¢8,500.
The robbers escaped through the bushes when a police patrol team arrived.
The accused and his accomplices returned to the scene the next day, 7th January 2011 and robbed other victims.
Amadu was later identified that day at about 2:00.a.m at Denu by one of his victims, Vincent Aryee, who was returning from Dzodze.
DSP Asafo Agyei added that Amadu was arrested and upon a search on him, a Nokia mobile phone belonging to the second complainant, Kwame Afariwa, was retrieved.
An amount of 2,750 Naira and GH¢36 were also retrieved.
After thorough investigations, the accused was charged with the offence.
Amadu pleaded not guilty, but he was convicted.
