Doctors in Ghana have been slammed for declaring a nationwide demonstration, Friday.Officials of the Fair Wages Commission told Joy News the action by the doctors is a breach of faith. The Ghana Medical Association announced the strike Friday, accusing the Fair Wages and Salary Commission of failing to address their concerns in migrating them onto the Single Spine Salary Structure. But George Smith Graham of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission said the action by the doctors is untenable. He told Joy News the Commission had engaged the doctors in a thorough negotiation during which the grading system for the doctors was agreed.According to him, the doctors agreed and thanked the Commission for a good job done only to turn around to announce the strike. He also questioned the timing of the strike, insisting no public officer in Ghana is paid on the 7 October. “So why do you announce a strike on October 7,” he quizzed. He said the Association should have at least waited until ending of October before announcing such a strike. He said the Commission is determined to complete the migration of the doctors in order for them to concentrate on other public workers. The Labour Commission is also not impressed with the action by the doctors.Mohammed Affum, Public Relations Officer of the Labour Commission said the doctors are not following the right procedures in addressing their grievances. He said when negotiations fail the law requires that the association in question must proceed to the Labour Commission for a peaceful resolution of a deadlock situation.“Taking the law into one's own hand is not a good thing and the Commission hopes that the GMA will respond positively to the overtures that the Commission has extended in inviting them to resolve the matter within two weeks as provided for in the law.”
