Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has backed the claims of former President John Mahama that Akufo-Addo has packed the courts with NPP-inclined judges.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Monday, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe said the position Mr Mahama has canvassed represents the position of the NDC relating to how they see things.
“Mr John Dramani Mahama has made his point very clear and what is this point, he is saying that with what has happened with the judiciary in the past years, with the benefit of power, the scale must balance. How is that difficult for my senior Saviour?” he asked.
This follows Mr Mahama's accusation against President Akufo-Addo that he had appointed members of his party to the bench to influence decisions in their favour.
According to him, some of the NDC lawyers should ready themselves to take up positions on the bench to balance out its composition.
“Our lawyers, some of you must be prepared to go onto the bench, I know that some of you have very lucrative legal practices you will not want to leave and go onto the bench.
“But you can see what the current President has done; he appointed the largest number of judges onto the bench. More than 80 towards hundred and counting.
“He’s packed the courts and we know that they’ve packed the courts because they want to avoid accountability after they have left office.
“So all manner of people who have been known to be partisan, to have been executives of their party who are in the legal profession have been leapfrogged onto the Superior courts and other places,” he said over the weekend at the NDC’s Lawyers Conference.

Meanwhile, the GBA has condemned Mr Mahama’s comment on the judiciary, describing it as unfortunate.
But in response to the GBA, Mr Edudzi Tamakloe said the GBA should respect Mr Mahama’s perspective on the issue, adding that Mr Mahama was encouraging lawyers associated with the NDC to take up appointments within the judiciary.
Edudzi Tamakloe says although the GBA may not agree with Mr Mahama on his views, “they cannot stop the former president in stating what he has observed.”
“Mr Mahama has stated that he will not act as an ostrich. This is a problem that he is seeing and he is saying that it requires balance. Take it or leave it, that is the point that he has made,” Edudzi Tamakloe maintained.
