The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has condemned criticisms of judgments that create public disaffection for judges.

President of the GBA, Benson Nutsukpui who raised the concern, says such criticisms are targeted at members of the judiciary in a manner that is purely abusive.

He was speaking at a 34th remembrance service in Accra to commemorate the murder of three high court judges.

Although social media is a useful tool, the GBA President said it has also become a convenient platform to make various attacks on judges.

“While citizens have the right to critique, it is absolutely unacceptable for those criticisms to be made in a language that is vituperative, sensational and purely abusive with the primary aim of inciting public dissatisfaction for our judges to undermine their integrity,” he said.

“As we celebrate our departed judges, it is my hope that we learn from the service and industry of the three and rededicate ourselves to the noble ideals of the rule of law which we so gallantly guide,” he added.

He urged that as the country approaches the November 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections, all citizens including public and state institutions should to re-commit themselves to the ideals of rule of law.

This will ensure that the elections “take place in an orderly credible, non-violent and peaceful environment.”

Chief Justice Georgina Woode as well as son of one of the murdered judges, Justice Sarkodie laid wreaths to mark the event.
