Presidential Advisor on Foreign Affairs, James Victor Gbeho has downplayed the seeming tension in the ranks of the ruling National Democratic Congress.
Speaking to the Ghanaian community in Trinidad and Tobago, where the president is attending the Commonwealth Summit, Mr Gbeho said recent disagreements within government and party’s leadership should be expected as the leaders jostle for positions in the upcoming national delegates conference within the party.
“In a year in which we are, as a ruling party are facing our annual congress which is coming on in a matter of weeks, it is not surprising that people are itching for leadership. They are criticizing one another in order to tell the delegates that they are more qualified people. In so doing they create the impression that we are divided,” he said.
His comments follow weeks of criticisms from the Rawlingses; Minority Leader Alban Babgin; Spio-Garbrah; and recently, Tei Nyaunu and Alfred Agbesi, both NDC MPs, against President Mills which has equally been met with quick rebuttals from Koku Anyidoho, Ato Ahwoi and Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, among others.
“I can assure you that we are not divided and that the opposition is more divided than we are,” Mr Gbeho added.
He dismissed reports that government was being too slow in honouring its campaign promises.
"This is the first time that we have got a government that is not in a hurry to seek approbation by arresting people on the other side and announcing projects it knows very well it cannot achieve.
“In our first year your NDC government is seeking to stabilize our finances and the economy,” he said.
President Mills and his entourage are expected to return to the country on Wednesday after attending the Commonwealth summit.
