National Security Coordinator, Colonel Larry Gbevlo-Lartey (retired), has been removed from office.
A statement signed by Information and Media Relations Minister, Mahama Ayariga says the Director of Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) Mr. Yaw Donkor has been appointed to replace Col. Gbevlo-Lartey effective May 12, 2014.
The statement said Col. Gbevlo-Lartey is to be re-assigned to a yet-to-be named designation.
President Mahama commended the out-going Security Coordinator for his "loyalty and dedicated service to the state".
Col. Gbevlo-Lartey was appointed to the position by late president John Atta Mills in 2009, following the National Democratic Congress' electoral victory in December 2008.
His name had come up in many controversial occurrences, the latest being his involvement in the destruction of a toll booth under construction at the Okponglo end of the gate leading to the campuses of University of Ghana, Legon.
His action drew condemnation for the Vice Chancellor, who described the action of the National Security capo as lawless because due process was not followed.
But Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey defended his action, claiming that the University had no right to put up the toll booth there.
