The Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has committed GHS 400 million towards the procurement of advanced medical equipment for a new teaching hospital at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), marking a significant boost for tertiary healthcare and medical training in Ghana.
The investment forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s broader vision to position public universities as globally competitive centres of excellence, combining academic research with high-quality service delivery.
The planned facility is expected to strengthen KNUST’s capacity to train healthcare professionals while addressing increasing demand for specialised medical services.
Once completed, the teaching hospital will serve as a major hub for clinical training, research, and healthcare delivery.
It is expected to provide modern, hands-on training opportunities for students, support innovation across key medical disciplines, and improve access to quality healthcare services in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
The GETFund Administrator commended the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his sustained advocacy for the project, noting his role in rallying stakeholder support as Chancellor of KNUST.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, was also praised for her leadership in advancing the initiative.
The project has been widely welcomed by stakeholders in both the education and health sectors, who describe it as a transformative step towards strengthening Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure and human resource development.
