The Head of Strategy and Cooperate Affairs of Ghana Cement Company (Ghacem), Dr George Dawson-Amoah has dismissed the notion that there is monopoly in the production and sale of cement in Ghana, saying such thinking is imaginary. According to him, the monopoly Ghacem enjoyed in the cement market was broken in March 2000 when Diamond Cement Company entered the market. In an interview on Joy FM's Super Morning Show Thursday, Dr Dawson-Amoah said there are currently four cement manufacturing companies in Ghana with one importer. He stressed that the fact that Ghacem holds a lion share in the market – 55%, Diamond cement 35%, Greenview 7-8%, an integrated plant in the North and an importer called Fortress – does not mean it has monopoly. “…We have a trade liberalization policy in Ghana which allows anybody at all, any business entity to import provided you actually go by the rules and regulation of the trade policy,” he maintained. Dr Amoah insisted that Ghacem is not afraid of completion but highlighted: “What we have been trumpeting is that it should be on a fair level ground.”
