Ghana has recorded an impressive 95% general vaccine immunisation coverage, earning commendation from global vaccine alliance GAVI.
The recognition came during a high-level meeting between the Ministry of Health and GAVI officials, who praised the country’s consistency and commitment to expanding access to vaccines.
Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO of GAVI, described Ghana’s progress as exceptional, attributing the achievement to sustained investments in the country’s health systems.
“I want to particularly commend and celebrate the exceptional progress Ghana has made in immunisation coverage. The country has consistently maintained DBT1 and DBT3 coverage above 95%. You have introduced 13 antigens into your routine programs, and I just heard you talk about the HPV multi-age cohort launch that you look forward to, and the introduction of the hepatitis B birth dose. I'm very pleased to let you know that our independent review committee has approved your application,” she said.
Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, welcomed the endorsement, describing it as a validation of the ministry’s hard work.
“You listen to the presentation, it is about coverage. The list I saw during the presentation was around 80-something, so in some cases, we even hit as much as 99 per cent coverage. If we hit 99 per cent coverage, it's a big achievement, and so we will make sure that we don't derail or drain these achievements we have so far,” he stated.
This global recognition not only cements Ghana’s place as a continental leader in immunisation but also underscores the vital role of sustained partnerships and funding in public health delivery.
The Ministry says it is committed to working even harder to close the remaining immunisation gaps in the coming years.
