Sprinter Sarfo Ansah delivered the standout performance at the Ghana Athletics Open Championship held on Saturday at the University of Ghana Stadium, clinching gold in the men’s 100m final with a commanding time of 10.32 seconds.
Despite a nervy start marked by two false starts, officials allowed the race to proceed without disqualifications. On the third attempt, Ansah kept his composure, surged out of the blocks, and exploded down the track to cross the finish line first in a tightly contested sprint.
There were more fireworks in the men’s 400m final, where Isaac Nii Lamptey claimed victory in 46.52 seconds. The race turned into a thrilling duel in the final 100 metres, but Lamptey held his nerve and found an extra gear in the last 30 metres to edge out his closest rival.
In the men’s 5000m, Ishmael Attah of the Ghana Armed Forces asserted his dominance from the start, building an early 10-metre lead and never looking back. His relentless pace saw him finish well ahead of the pack in 14:43 minutes, underlining his status as one of Ghana’s top long-distance prospects.
The women’s events also delivered standout performances. In the 200m final, Janet Mensah powered home in 25.04 seconds to secure a convincing win, demonstrating both speed and control as she outpaced the field.
The championship brought together some of Ghana’s finest track and field athletes, serving as a critical platform as they prepare for major international competitions on the horizon.
