Ghana Climate Innovation Centre (GCIC) has held a lecture to highlight climate-smart, climate-responsive, green alternatives to treating and managing waste, powering the nation, and feeding people.
The Centre explained that this is due to the limited resources and infrastructure to deal with increasing waste being generated in the country.
Speakers at the event were unanimous on the need for more education, waste reduction and innovative recycling programmes to generate income for the country.
One of the speakers, Glenn Gyimah, Head of Research and Quality Assurance with Jospong Group underscored the need for government to invest in recycling.
He indicated that some of the landfills are currently full and causing a nuisance to residents in areas where they are located.
The best way out, Mr Gyimah called for policy change since waste is a resource at the wrong place.
Also, Enoch Boadu, CEO of DAS Biogas appealed to government to commit more resources into Ghana’s renewable energy systems.
He noted that biogas is not only used as an energy feedstock but also produces digested biomass, which is a more efficient fertiliser than raw manure.
Citing his company as an example, Mr Boadu said the electricity generated from their biogas system can be used to meet operational energy demands.
On his part, the CEO of Setech, Lovance Owusu-Takyi urged households to adopt clean cooking methods.
He stated that cooking with pellets and briquettes in clean biomass gasifier stoves produced by his company promotes healthy living.
Mr Owusu-Takyi said his product is made from agro-waste and therefore reduces the overdependence on forest and trees as sources of fuel for cooking.
