The government of Ghana has deported three Israeli nationals in direct response to what it decries as “ill-treatment and unjustified deportation” of Ghanaian citizens by Israeli authorities, a move meant to safeguard the dignity of Ghanaians abroad.
According to a press statement released on December 10, 2025, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision came after three Ghanaian nationals were reportedly deported from Israel under “unacceptable” circumstances. As a result, Accra moved swiftly to expel three Israelis who had recently arrived in Ghana.
In announcing the decision, the Foreign Affairs Minister, who shared the statement on his Facebook page, opened it with, "The government of Ghana has been compelled to activate appropriate reciprocal action by deporting three Israelis who arrived in Ghana earlier today following the ill-treatment and unwarranted deportation of three Ghanaians. Both Governments have now agreed to an amicable resolution."
The statement notes that the Charge d’Affaires ad interim at the Embassy of the State of Israel was summoned to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, in the absence of Israel’s Ambassador to Ghana, as both governments agreed to pursue an amicable resolution.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the dignity of Ghanaian citizens, emphasising that citizens of friendly nations must exclusively be treated with dignity and respect when visiting Ghana.
“The Government of Ghana will continue to safeguard the dignity of its nationals and also that of other nationals.”
“Ghana deeply values our relations with all friendly countries and expects our citizens to be treated with dignity and respect in much the same way as other governments expect Ghana to treat their nationals.”
Why Ghana Took Action
The retaliatory move follows a widely reported incident on December 7, 2025, when several Ghanaian travellers arriving at Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport were detained or deported without clear justification. Among them were four members of a Ghanaian parliamentary delegation travelling to Tel Aviv for an international cybersecurity conference.
The remaining three were denied entry and deported on the next available flight.
In its earlier statement, the Foreign Affairs Ministry described the actions of Israeli authorities as “inhumane and traumatic,” saying Ghanaian travellers had been “deliberately targeted.”
With the deportation of the three Israelis, Ghana signals that violations against its citizens will meet a firm but measured response.

The government’s actions underscore a broader demand for reciprocal respect and fair treatment of nationals in international travel and diplomatic relations.
This latest development marks a serious test for Ghana–Israel relations.
