The Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD) has commended Multimedia for its ongoing support in raising awareness of the challenges faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Ghana. The GFD acknowledges the crucial role the media plays in advocating for change and amplifying the voices of vulnerable groups.
Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, Programme Manager of GFD, Peter Anomah Kodie, expressed his appreciation for the media's continued efforts in bringing attention to issues affecting persons with disabilities.
"As an organisation, we are always eager to collaborate with the media to highlight the issues faced by persons with disabilities," Mr. Kodie said.
It is not always possible for us to be aware of everything happening across the country, and that’s where the media plays a crucial role.
He explained that the media helps bring these issues to the forefront, allowing the GFD to advocate for meaningful change once they are informed.
"Over the years, the media has been instrumental in shedding light on the challenges faced by persons with disabilities," he added.
Mr. Kodie also highlighted the significant contribution of Multimedia, which has been a steadfast voice for the disability community.
"We have seen documentaries showcasing how communities and individuals are supporting each other. The media, particularly Multimedia, has been a steadfast voice for us, and we are truly grateful for that partnership," he remarked.
He further referenced a Joy FM documentary on the University of Ghana, which shed light on the challenges faced by students with disabilities.
"I was particularly moved by the documentary about the University of Ghana, where we saw the situation faced by students with disabilities and how the media brought attention to their challenges and offered assistance," Mr. Kodie said.
Despite the positive media coverage in urban centres, Mr. Kodie raised concerns about the media’s reach in rural areas.
"While we have seen positive media coverage in urban centres, what about persons with disabilities in rural areas? Many individuals in these regions may not have access to the information or resources they need to seek help. They may not have the opportunity to watch these programmes or listen to broadcasts, which presents a major challenge for persons with disabilities and vulnerable groups," he noted.
He urged the media to extend its reach to rural communities, where many untold stories of hardship and resilience remain.
"Addressing the issues of persons with disabilities and vulnerable persons in rural communities is a significant challenge," Mr. Kodie explained.
"We encourage the media not to overlook these areas. While Joy FM has done remarkable work, we must ensure that we focus on reaching rural communities as well. These are the areas where we can find powerful, moving stories, and they, too, are citizens of Ghana who deserve our attention."he said.
Mr. Kodie expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Joy FM for its continued support of persons with disabilities in Ghana.
"We deeply appreciate the efforts that Joy FM has made, and we wholeheartedly encourage you to continue your excellent work in supporting persons with disabilities across the country," he concluded.
