Ghana on Tuesday welcomed ministers and energy leaders from across West Africa to the 2025 West Africa Energy Cooperation Summit (WAECS) in Accra, where the Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor, emphasised the need for regional integration to strengthen energy security and accelerate development.
Speaking at the Ministers’ Roundtable at Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City, the Enery Minister highlighted a landmark achievement: the first full synchronisation of the West African power grid.
The trial, conducted at Sakete substation in Benin in November 2025, temporarily linked the Ghana-Togo-Benin network with Nigeria.
“This historic synchronisation demonstrates the tangible benefits of regional cooperation and brings us a step closer to a unified West African electricity market,” the Minister said.
He stressed that integrating energy markets through the West African Power Pool (WAPP) and harmonising policies will reduce costs, improve reliability, and expand access for citizens across the region.
Ghana also showcased its commitment to aligning domestic energy policy with regional priorities, including expansion of gas infrastructure, digital solutions in upstream petroleum exploration, and private-sector participation in electricity distribution.
“The time to act is now,” the Minister urged.
“Let us finalise interconnection protocols, harmonise tariffs, and accelerate joint infrastructure planning. Together, we can power the dreams of our people.”
