A former close ally of ex-President Rawlings in the AFRC regime, Major Boakye Djan, has described the raging leadership issues in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a ‘suicide’ operation that has the potential of tearing the whole country apart.Speaking to Adom News on Thursday, October 28, Major Boakye Djan said Ghanaians should be worried about what is going on in the NDC because the results will be disastrous should it finally blow up.For several days running, the NDC has been in a fix of some sort as factions emerge in the party expressing support for various personalities to be presidential candidates in the 2012 elections. While some have stated their firm solidarity for President Mills, others are hoping Vice President John Mahama will stake an interest for their support, while former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, is also the choice of others.Of the three personalities, it is supporters of Nana Konadu who have been very vocal in their campaign.Over the weekend, her supporters pasted posters with the inscription Konadu for 2012 in parts of the country, an action which sparked wild reactions compelling national executives of the party to meet on Wednesday to declare a truce. The developments, according to Major Boakye Djan, are a cause for worry because they could turn out to be a much bigger problem. He said Ghanaians should ask questions as it is their legitimate right because the fate of the sitting president is at stake.Major Boakye Djan disclosed that the exact thing played out during the Limann era when people like Amartey Kwei and others besieged parliament and sacked all the parliamentarians and that that sparked the June 4 revolution which eventually culminated in the 31st December uprising. He added that the situation is even more serious and worrying now since most of the major players in the 31st December uprising are the same ones involved in what he says is a ‘power struggle’ this time round.Story by Kofi Adomah/Adom News/Ghana
