Ghanaian motivational speaker, Emmanuel Dei-Tumi has declared that Ghana lacks visionary leaders hence the nation’s inability to develop at a faster pace.
According to him, the problem of leadership is not peculiar to Ghana but the African continent at large.
He noted that the nation has not given the needed attention to the grooming of visionary leaders so people who happen to find themselves in various positions are described as leaders though they have no idea about leadership.
Speaking on Spring Board on Joy FM over the weekend, Mr. Dei-Tumi said he gets sick ‘when he hears people who occupy public offices, who by all intent and purposes do not even have the slightest knowledge about leadership call themselves leaders’.
'I am tired and sick of a situation where you have people who will not learn but think that because they occupy specific positions they consider themselves leaders. Leadership is not about occupying positions’ he insisted.
He said that people out of default get higher positions through their commitment to either an organization or a political party or sometimes because they are good orators and can best communicate the ideas of the organization or party, maintaining that there is a clear distinction between a position occupant and a leader.
He explained that leadership is a question of influence and further stated that a good leader should be able to galvanize his team to achieve unique shared vision.
The motivational speaker described visionary leaders as people who work with imagination, insight and boldness and present a challenge that demands the best in people, brings them together and around a shared vision.
Mr. Dei- Tumi stated that the nation needs to pay more attention to developing leadership and build institutions that will train visionary leaders to steer the affairs of the nation.
He said that leadership is an ingredient for national development especially in the twenty first century. The leadership expert says where there is lack of quality leadership, the nation deteriorates and leads to abuse of resources and rampant display of arrogance.
Mr. Dei- Tumi advocated for the establishment of institutions that will train people to become visionary leaders to help solve the challenges of the nation.
