Government has entered into an agreement with its Libyan counterpart to provide labour assistance to citizens of both countries.
Foreign Minister Mohammed Mumuni who disclosed this to Joy News hopes the agreement will go a long way to solve employment issues faced by Ghanaian immigrants living in that country.
Alhaji Mumuni who was reacting to latest reports of the arrest of Ghanaians allegedly stranded in the North African oil-rich country said due to the illegal status of such immigrants, they often get into trouble with the law enforcement agencies.
The Foreign Affairs Minister explained that in view of such situations “the long term view [government is] taking is that under the auspices of the Ghana Libya Joint Commission of Cooperation operated under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We have discussed with our Libyan counterparts and we have agreed to sign some kind of a labour exchange agreement.”
There are reports that over two hundred Ghanaians are stranded in Libya because their employers have failed to pay them. Foreign minister Mohammed Mumuni for now cannot confirm this but says the media must be circumspect in their reportage on such issues.
