Ghana must patent Kente now – US Ambassador

The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Donald Teitelbaum says it is time Ghana got patent right for its rich Kente fabric. Kente is considered a symbol of pride in Ghana but there is concern the cloth is losing its value abroad as a result of its piracy. Mr Teitelbaum says Ghana must take steps to protect its own intellectual property from pirates. Speaking at a special meeting between members of the Ghana and American Chambers of Commerce at the US embassy, he said he hoped Adinkra symbols will be trademarked in Ghana. He further added that there is the need for Ghana to attach its name to the Kente brand. According to US Ambassador, Ghana has competitive globally attractive products and there is the need for Ghana to take the right steps to get the products unto the international market and reap full benefits from its trade.
