The South African High Commissioner in Ghana Jeanette Ndhlovu has called on Ghana to set a positive example as the nation awaits judgment on the petition challenging the declaration of President John Mahama as winner of the December 2012 elections.According to Ms Ndhlovu, the government and people of South Africa are strongly behind Ghanaians and are hopeful Ghana will go through this period peacefully.Speaking’ on Inside Africa - a Pan-African Development program - on Accra-based Radio Universe, the South African High Commissioner also asked Ghanaians to stand united irrespective of the ruling.Commenting on the significance of the election petition for the rest of the continent, Ms Ndhlovu said it is an indication that Coup d'états are becoming a thing of the past and that African leaders have embraced the concept of democratic governance for which reason, Africans should be proud. The panel of nine justices adjudicating the petition at the Supreme Court is set to deliver a historic judgment Thursday, August 29 on the petition which was filed by three leading members of the New Patriotic Party - 2012 flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, his running mate Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia and party Chairman Jacob Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey.The petitioners claim the elections were rigged in favour of John Mahama and are therefore seeking nullification of the results.
