The 2017/18 Ghana premier league season could be set for a midway hiatus to make way for the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Despite Ghana’s failure to qualify for the worldwide showpiece, a directive from FIFA means all leagues must end before the competition kicks off on June 14.
The league has been tentatively set to start in February leaving no chance for its conclusion prior to the commencement of the World Cup and according to the spokesperson of the Premier League Board, they have to ponder on the best solution within the shortest possible time.
“The league is normally organized within 10 months and the World Cup is held in one month, in June,” he told Joy Sports.

“So whatever the case is, if at that stage the league has to go on break for fans to have full attention on the World Cup or if the league will continue, will be decided by the Premier League Board and the Ghana FA.”
“Ghana is not participating but in taking decisions, you also have to take into consideration the interest of fans and the league as well so I believe that the board and the GFA will look through it and come out with the best interest of the league and the fans.”
The last time Ghana was in such a dilemma was in 2005 prior to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. At that time, the teams played in a novelty league which saw teams divided into Northern and Southern zones with Hearts emerging victorious over Kotoko in the final.
According to reports, the Ghana FA together with the league management are contemplating a Novelty league.
