The Right Reverend Dr Daniel Yinkah-Sarfo, the Anglican Bishop of Kumasi, has urged political parties and their supporters to do everything to steer the nation off the path of confusion and violence. They should draw useful lessons from the mistakes made by politicians elsewhere in Africa, resulting in bitter conflicts. The Rt Rev Dr Yinkah-Sarfo was speaking at a forum to educate the people on their fundamental rights and civic duties in Kumasi. It was organized by the Asante Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and brought together members of the church, political party activists and youth groups. The Anglican Bishop underlined the need for decency, tolerance and political accommodation. “What Ghanaians want to hear is how those asking for their votes are going to tackle the growing poverty, joblessness, destruction of the environment and the myriad of challenges they are daily confronted with.” He said the electioneering campaign therefore should be based on issues of real interest to the people – the policies and programmes that would improve the quality of life. The Rt Rev Dr Yinkah-Sarfo appealed to the people to share in the responsibility of helping to make the December 7 general elections, free, fair, transparent and credible. He cautioned against complacency, saying the relative peace the nation was enjoying must never be taken for granted. The Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, Chairperson of the Presbytery, said they would continue to educate their members on their civic responsibilities and assist them to actively participate in the political governance of the nation. Mr Isaac Owusu, Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, said the Commission is determined to ensure the successful conduct of this year’s elections.
