Ghana's national rugby sevens team delivered a commanding performance to kick off their 2025 Rugby Africa Men’s 7s campaign, defeating regional rivals Uganda 17–07 in their opening fixture at the Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius.
The result marks a strong and confident start for the Ghanaian side, widely referred to as the "Eagles," as they look to assert themselves among Africa’s top rugby nations in this year’s prestigious tournament.
Displaying tactical discipline, physicality, and flair, Ghana made their intentions clear from the onset—taking control of the game and never letting up. The team’s sharp passing, aggressive tackling, and clinical finishing proved too much for the Ugandans, who have traditionally been considered one of the continent’s rugby powerhouses.
“Strong start, bold statement!” Ghana Rugby proudly declared in a post-match reaction, adding that the win was “a powerful performance and a solid step forward. Let’s keep the momentum going!”
The 17–07 victory not only boosts Ghana’s confidence but also positions them well in the group standings as the tournament progresses. With this triumph, the Eagles send a clear signal to other contenders that they are in Mauritius not just to compete, but to contend.
This victory is particularly significant for Ghana Rugby, which has been undergoing strategic development to elevate its global competitiveness. From grassroots training to international fixtures, the progress is now evident on the field.
The team will look to build on this momentum as the tournament continues over the weekend, with upcoming matches determining their path to the knockout stages and ultimately, a shot at continental glory.
