Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has disclosed that Ghana will receive a consignment of reagents used for testing Covid-19 samples next week.
Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story Thursday, said the consignment will revamp the testing capabilities of the country and restore the currently defunct testing centres.
“With the consignment coming in from China we should be able to catch up and clear the backlog as quickly as possible,” he said.
Earlier today, a researcher at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Dr Kofi Bonney hinted that seven testing centres in the country were forced to shut down due to lack of logistics.
According to him, this has resulted in high pressure on the two major testing centres in the country, NMIMR and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR).
But, the Director-General of the GHS said his outfit is working devotedly to ensure that the essential logistics needed to analyse Covid-19 samples are restocked.
He indicated that the Service is efficiently improvising to ensure the smooth running of activities until the consignment reaches Ghana from China.
“The issue is not about money, it is about availability. The whole world is scrambling for the same commodity so you don’t know who gets what and it does not come at the time you need them and so those are some of the challenges that currently we are facing."
He further reiterated calls for citizens to adhere to the safety protocols of the disease as Ghana's case count nears 20,000.
