President John Mahama has reiterated Ghana’s commitment to combating money laundering and terrorism as the rest of the world joins to fight these crimes.
Speaking at a meeting with members of the Financial Action Task Force currently in the country to ascertain Ghana’s compliance in fighting the two crimes, the President assured the Task Force of government’s preparedness to erase the moniker Ghana has earned as a transit point for narcotics.
The delegation was led by Richard Charners.
President Mahama told the team that his government has put in place the necessary mechanisms to achieve total results.
The President said more resources are being committed to training “staff at the Financial Intelligence Centre so that they can carry out their work effectively”.
Charners told President Mahama that on paper, Ghana is making substantial progress towards combating money laundering and terrorism.
He explained that the delegation’s visit, among other things, aimed to confirm the reports they had received regarding Ghana’s efforts to curtail drug trafficking and to ensure that the institutional capacity and commitment to make progress on this front is in place.
