Thousands of Ghananians on Monday thronged the 25 GloWorld shops across the country to either activate their reserved lines, buy new SIM cards, port their numbers to Glo, or to make enquiries about the latest telecommunication company launched over the weekend.
Glo launched commercial service on Sunday, April 29, 2012 after three long years of keeping Ghanaians waiting. Ahead of the launch, the company did a number reservation campaign under which a reported 1.5million Ghanaians reserved special 023-3 and 023-5 numbers.
The launch on Sunday therefore opened the flood gates for all these 1.5 million people plus other persons who may want to buy new Glo SIMs to go to any of the 25 GloWorld shops across country to activate their SIMs, and from what Adom News gathered, day one was very eventful as the GloWorld shops were practically crowded.
At the GloWorld shop off the Ring Road in Accra, enthusiastic subscribers were seen patiently queuing up to be attended to by officials.
A cross section of the subscribers expressed delight about the unique offerings of Glo Mobile especially the “good day Ghana package” which gave subscribers free 20Gp worth of credit everyday for one hundred days.
One of the subscribers, 30-year-old Mohammed said he would like Glo Mobile to be number one in Ghana because of the comprehensive support the company was giving to the Black Stars, the country’s senior national team.
The prospective Glo subscribers said they were also excited about the other freebies on offer, include one minute bonus for incoming calls from any network, sweet number that enabled subscribers to call one special person for 2Gp per minute, 100% bonus on recharge, free night calls to any Glo number and sundry value added services.
At the GloWorld shop in Tema, Adom News found several hundreds of prospective Glo Ghana customers have crowded the shop waiting to activate their Glo lines, while others stood in a long queue.
Some of them spoke with Adom News and said they wanted to be among the first to use the Glo service, while others said they had heard about Glo’s services and competitive tariffs in Nigeria so they also wanted to experience it.
Some of the prospective customers specifically mentioned that they felt some networks had failed and cheated them for too long so they were switching to Glo.
But some complained that the one week for the activation of reserved numbers was to too short because people had work to do so they could not leave their work and go join long queues at Glo shops all day.
“Some of us came here at 8am and they finished processing our activation almost at 3pm,” one man who lived in Accra and worked in Tema said.
He therefore appealed for an extension of the activation period to enable people to relax and activate their lines after work.
“I think Glo should extend the activation period to three months because the process is too slow compared to other networks and the GloWorld shops are too small,” another one said.
He explained that when Zain (Airtel) did their number reservation exercise, people bought the SIM cards from vendors long before going to activate them, but with Glo the sale of SIM cards and activation were being done together, and that had slowed the process.
Another said the GloWorld shop staff attended to people in a disorderly manner, but needed to issue numbers (codes) to prospective customers so they could attend to people in a more orderly manner.
Meanwhile other reports monitored from other parts of the country showed lots of people were eager to either activate their reserved Glo line, connect new Glo lines, or port their existing lines to Glo, but people were also not enthused about the slow and time-consuming pace of the process.
