The Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) has set out to engage three major institutions to use the Direct Debit system of the Automated Clearing House (ACH).They include the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Insurance companies. Although GhIPSS is also talking to other institutions, these three are the main target to achieve a very high patronage for the new payment system.These institutions collect a lot of money on regular basis in the form of workers’ pension contributions, electricity tariffs and insurance premiums. But they tend to use very cumbersome and less efficient methods of collecting the monies.But speaking in an interview, the Chief Executive of GhIPSS, Archie Hesse said the institutions can use Direct Debit for such collections, which is faster and more efficient. He said the three institutions will be actively engaged to encourage them to switch to Direct Debit.Direct Debit is an electronic payment system that enables a company on a recurring basis to collect agreed amount money from customers through their banks on agreed dates.Direct Credit, on the other hand is used for regular payments and almost all the banks in the country are now using Direct Credit to process workers’ salaries.
