Three time winner Gifty Koomson insists the attractive prize package at stake at this year’s Accra Milo Marathon is enough motivation for her to clinch the title once again.
Organizers have announced that winners at the marathon in both male and female divisions will pocket 10,000 cedis. The first runner up will receive 7,000 cedis and 5,000 cedis will be handed to the second runner-up.
Gifty Koomson expects tough opposition from the other 6,500 runners to participate in this year’s event but remains optimistic of claiming the ultimate on September 21.
She told JOY Sports, “This year is different. The money involved is huge so many runners have been training. Everyone is planning to get the money so it will be difficult but I will try.”
She added, “It is all about training so I am intensifying my training to ensure I win the race.”
Gifty Koomson picked up her three titles in 1996, 1997 and 1999 and has since played second fiddle to Millicent Boadi. Her best finish in the 42.2 km race since 2000 has been second place.
