The Ghana Immigration Service has launched a strong defence of its actions in the face of accusations of complicity in issuing working permits to illegal Chinese miners.
The service is set to invite the Managing Director of the firm Daniel Antwi-Boasiako for questioning, as the Interior Minister takes keen interest in the case.
Preliminary investigations by the service found several instances of forgery of visas for Chinese miners working for the mining firm, Hansol.
The Managing Director of the firm had accused the service of complicity in the scandal following the arrest of 125 Chinese illegal miners last week.
But Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACOI), Mr Francis Palmdeti, admitted a genuine permit was granted the Chinese in 2008.
He explained that the permit was granted based on recommendations by the Minerals Commission, which the GIS complied with.
“But as we speak Hansol has no documentation giving them the right to engage Chinese workers in this country” he explained.
A specific date was not given, but the Service says it will invite Mr. Antwi-Boasiako very soon.
