MP for Zebila and Majority Leader in Parliament, Cletus Avoka has cautioned opposition parties and other Ghanaians to stop denigrating the EC for the benefit of all Ghanaians.
According to him, the EC plays a sensitive role and therefore incumbent on people in responsible leadership position not to malign the integrity of the EC to the international community and to Ghanaians.
He said the EC has conducted five credible elections and has respect, credibility and experience. “I think that in an election year, if there is anything that we can do to forestall any crisis and conflict, it would be to repose confidence in the work of the electoral commission. Unless we are satisfied there is abundant evidence of prejudice and bias, we should be cautious about how we label electoral commission or how we accuse the electoral commission particularly in an electoral year.”
Cletus Avoka advised that failure to be cautious about this will raise unnecessary tension. Mr. Avoka who was speaking on pm: EXPRESS Thursday said the EC deserved the benefit of the doubt, and Ghanaians particularly opposition parties must appreciate their challenges and create an atmosphere where people will continue to respect election results.
His statement comes on the heels of a massive objection staged by the minority in parliament Thursday against the EC laying a Constitutional Instrument to give it legal backing to create additional constituencies.
Article 47 of the constitution confers the powers to create new constituencies on the Electoral Commission, but the minority argues that the EC cannot interpret the law to mean adding new constituencies each time.
Meanwhile, a group calling itself, concerned citizens of Ghana has sued the EC seeking to place an injunction on the creation of new constituencies.
But Cletus Avoka said the minority has no case and therefore must thread with caution so as to not disparage the EC unnecessarily especially as Ghana has gained respect with election management and organization. He called for Article 47 to be reviewed so a ceiling can be placed on it.
