The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has warned that it will publicly expose any individual or group that attacks journalists during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming presidential primary.

Addressing a press briefing on Wednesday, GJA President, Albert Dwumfour, said that the association will actively monitor the entire electoral process through its regional structures across the country.

“We will not hesitate to name and shame any individual or group that assaults journalists in the course of this assignment,” he warned.

The caution comes ahead of the NPP’s presidential primary to elect a flagbearer for the party on January 31, an exercise expected to attract widespread media coverage and intense political activity nationwide.

Mr Dwumfour reiterated the association’s call on the leadership of the NPP to take full responsibility and ensure the safety of journalists deployed to cover the flagbearer election.

Mr Dwumfour also urged the party to clearly and publicly caution its supporters against attacking, intimidating, or obstructing journalists in the course of their duties.

“Political competition must never be allowed to degenerate into violence against the media,” he stressed.

He noted that journalists play a critical role in deepening democracy and must be allowed to work in a safe and enabling environment, particularly during high-stakes political events such as presidential primaries.
