Globacom emerged as one of the 10 most valuable brands in Africa, and the only privately owned company to make the top 10 list at the maiden edition of Brand Africa 100 Awards in South Africa last month.
Reports from Nigeria indicate the award was in recognition of Mike Adenuga's commitment to growing an African telecommunications company that has transcended borders from Nigeria through Benin Republic, Ghana, Senegal, Gambia and Ivory Coast, with plans to go overseas.
The awards, organised by Brand South Africa and Brand Leadership Academy, was to recognise high performing brands on the continent based on qualitative, quantitative and secondary research.
The scheme was developed by the Brand Leadership Academy, in partnership with TNS and Brand Finance Plc, as a tool to conduct brand evaluation and reward excellent brand performance on the continent.
The valuation also takes into consideration how brands are evaluated by both consumers and investors, taking into consideration how consumer affinity for brands translates into value for the investors.
Research was conducted across Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, and 33.7 per cent of the brands nominated were indigenous African plans like Glo and the remaining 66.3 per cent were international brands.
Meanwhile Ghana has been waiting for the past two years for Glo to launch its mobile service in country.
The company launched its fibre optic backbone, Glo One in Ghana recently and boasted it would bring real competition into the mobile market when it launches.
It is still not clear how many clients it has on the Glo One, and it is also not clear when it would launch its mobile services in Ghana as two deadlines; August ending and September 15th, have already been missed.
Officials of Glo in Ghana have been completely silent about the company’s operations in country, but recent media reports suggested it would launch mobile services by October 15, which is just 11 days away.
Meanwhile Glo is headline sponsor of Ghana’s Premier Football league and has signed on several actors, musicians and football star Asamoah Gyan as brand icons, and has been promising high quality service prior to its launch in Ghana.
