The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has said if doctors are not returning to the consulting room, there is nothing they can do.
“We at the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission have done our part, we have negotiated on behalf of government, we submitted a schedule that we believe the paymaster will be comfortable with. So if they (doctors) are not returning to the consulting room it’s out of our competence. We don’t deal with strike actions. Now it’s an issue that needs to be handled by the Labour Commission and their employer...the Ghana Health Service”, Earl Ankrah, Public Relations Officer for FWSC told Joy News.
The doctors have refused to return to work despite appeals from civil society.
The FWSC has, however indicated it will continue to negotiate with the doctors if they return to the table.
Meanwhile, Health Minster Sherry Ayittey will Wednesday continue her tour of some major hospitals in Accra to assess the impact of the ongoing strike by doctors and pharmacists.
Yesterday, she was at the Ridge and 37 military hospitals for the same reason and today she plans to be at the Police and Korle-bu Teaching Hospitals to have first hand information about the extent of the effect of the strike by the Ghana Medical Association and Government Hospital Pharmacists Association as it enters the third day.
The doctors have embarked on the industrial action over their unpaid salary arrears while the pharmacists are also on strike because of placement, after the introduction of the Single Spine Salary Structure.
