Workers of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) have welcomed the National Media Commission’s (NMC) announcement it will inaugurate a new board of directors for the agency. The NMC as part of its statutory mandate announced in a statement that it will inaugurate a new board for the GNA, the Graphic Communications Group, New Times Corporation and The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on Friday, May 6. The announcement coincides with misunderstanding between the NMC and the outgoing board of the GNA on one hand and the workers of the Agency on the other. The workers, weeks ago, embarked on a strike to protest the continuous stay of their Managing Director (MD), Nana Appau Dua, in office. The workers accused the beleaguered MD of running down the agency with careless abandon, and heaved a sigh relief after he was asked to proceed on leave by the Board which he didn’t adhere to. Although the workers welcomed the NMC move, they stated that this will not solve the problems of the agency as long as Nana Appau Dua remains at post. They were however satisfied by steps the NMC is taking to address their challenges. Mr. Atukwei Quaye, Secretary of the Communications Workers Union of the GNA, speaking to Citi News Thursday said they are closely working with the GNA Board. “We’ve been working with the Board and so we don’t have a problem. We don’t know the composition of the Board, who is coming, who is out, who is in.” He said the fracas with Nana Appau Dua still holds and hinted that they will resume their strike if he comes back to work.
