Prosper Tachie has been elected the new President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), defeating incumbent leader Rev. Isaac Owusu in a keenly contested national election held in Accra.
Mr Tachie secured 436 votes, representing 61.75 per cent of the total valid ballots cast, while Rev. Owusu polled 266 votes, amounting to 37.78 per cent.
A third contender, Charles K. Amponsah, garnered just two votes, representing 0.28 per cent.
The election took place during GNAT’s 7th National Delegates Conference at the UPSA Auditorium, bringing together teachers and representatives from across the country to choose new national leaders.
Out of a total of 706 votes cast, 704 were declared valid, with two rejected.
As president-elect, he is expected to lead negotiations with the government and other stakeholders on matters affecting teachers, including the ongoing push for improved remuneration, professional development, and better learning environments.
